A Holiday on a Street Bench
Shaul Moshe
When you hear about hungry people, you think it’s something made up. So, everyone who thinks that there are no poor people in Israel, only in the newspapers – I invite you to come to the commercial center opposite Kfar Saba police station to see me sleeping on a bench. Usually I sleep in my car, but yesterday someone got into my car and drove off with it, so I lost that roof too. On Rosh Hashana, I am going to be spending the holiday on a bench, because no one c
ares about Shauli who was a combatant in the army and a school security guard who looked after the boys and girls who loved him.
People ask me, who is to blame for my situation? My family? The government? I don’t know. Maybe I’m just unlucky. When Yehuda Ben-Hamo was mayor of Kfar Saba, he helped me and gave me 600 shekels every month so I would have a roof over my head, but now he is no longer mayor and there is no one sufficiently generous to help an invisible person like me, so this Rosh Hashana, when you are with your family and you are eating a hot meal, remember that there are people who are not as lucky as you are. Happy holiday, people of Israel.
