Celebrating the Gift of Torah with Care and Compassion
Shavuot 2024 Chasdei Naomi continues to provide Holocaust Survivors and Elderly Citizens solace through the Jewish nation’s eternal strength and unity.
This Shavuot, Chasdei Naomi is dedicating special attention to Holocaust survivors and elderly citizens, making sure they can take part in the traditional customs of the Shavuot Harvest Festival!
Through our Shavuot campaign, we will be delivering an abundance of dairy products, and everything they need for a Shavuot Harvest Festival, to the homes of Holocaust survivors across Israel.
As the Jewish community around the world prepares to commemorate the holiday of Shavuot, the time-honored tradition of receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai, Chasdei Naomi is honored to continue its legacy of supporting those in need throughout Israel.
What is Shavuot?
Shavuot is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai. It is one of the three major Jewish pilgrimage festivals.
The name “Shavuot” means “weeks” in Hebrew, as the holiday occurs 7 weeks (or 50 days) after the second day of Passover.
Shavuot is celebrated for one or two days, depending on the location. In Israel, it is celebrated for one day, while in the Diaspora (outside of Israel) it is celebrated for two days.
Traditional customs for Shavuot include:
- Shavuot is associated with the agricultural harvest festival of Shavuot, when the first fruits and grains were brought as offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem.
- Eating dairy foods like cheeses and cakes
- Reading the Book of Ruth, which takes place during the harvest season
- Decorating homes and synagogues with flowers and greenery
- All-night study sessions known as Tikkun Leil Shavuot
- The holiday emphasizes the importance of the Torah and the Jewish people’s covenant with God. It marks the completion of the journey that began with the Exodus from Egypt.
